Legal Information for Writers

Public Liability Insurance

As a writer working at public events, it is essential that you consider the multiple risks you will incur which could result in legal proceedings being taken against you. Accidental bodily injury to third parties, or third party property could result in compensation demands being made of you. It is recommended that you take out public liability insurance to protect you from such claims. Indeed, some schools / local authorities now insist that visiting individuals or groups are able to demonstrate that they already have some form of cover in place.

Blake Insurance, in partnership with Allianz Cornhill, have designed a policy specifically tailored towards the protection of self–employed persons involved within the creative arts and literary fields. Their Creative Arts Scheme Policy for writers, authors, poets, playwrights and storytellers is available at two premium bands; a limit of either £2 million cover for £75 per annum or a limit of £5 million cover for £97 per annum. This policy protects you against liability to pay compensation for bodily injury to third parties, or third party property in connection with your business and occurring anywhere in the world. It also covers you against liability to pay compensation for damage caused by goods manufactured, sold or supplied by you up to a limit of £2 million or £5 million, covers loss or damage to your personal property up to £1,500 and covers up to £50,000 towards legal expenses taken by you or your legal representative in pursuit of your own compensation. For more information, including more details on what the policy covers, as well as the terms, conditions and exclusions applicable with this scheme, please contact:
