MACKPENFIELD GRANT, ROY
Roy lives in Duffryn, Newport and has five grown up children. He is a committed voluntary worker, and a trustee or member of several organisations creating initiatives for the benefit of the local community. Roy has been a member of the BBC’s Audience Council Wales since 2005.
He left his native Jamaica in 1962 to seek a new life in Great Britain, settling in Newport after finding work with an engineering firm despite suffering from blindness in one eye. Roy became production manager until being made redundant at the height of the recession in 1982. He then set up his own transport and catering business.
In 1997 Roy was totally blinded for 11 months when he suffered a hemorrhage in his good eye brought on by diabetes. A series of operations eventually restored partial sight, and this encouraged Roy to go back to school on a writing therapy course. In 2003 he published his critically-acclaimed autobiography When Darkness Turns To Light (Morgan Publishing, 2003). Roy received an Academi bursary in 2004-5 and to date has penned five novels, of which two have been published, as well as several short stories.
