Novelist and translator. He was born in Wrexham in 1954 and educated at Ysgol Morgan Llwyd, University College of North Wales Bangor and Jesus College, Oxford where he prepared a research dissertation on ‘The Novel in Welsh and Language Contact’ which considers the effects on Welsh language novelists of the changing status of the Welsh language during the twentieth century.

His translations of Heinrich Böll (winner of the 1973 Nobel prize for literature) were published by the Welsh Academy in 1980. As well as two novels in Welsh he has also published a book on karate and judo and a walkers’ guide to the one hundred highest peaks in Wales, which he translated into English under the title The Welsh One Hundred (Y Lolfa). He has also contributed poems, short stories and articles on a variety of subjects – including an account of a trip to Everest in 1993 – to both English and Welsh language publications. More recently, he has ghost–written a number of autobiographies for private clients.

A third, more serious novel, has been in progress for some time and Dafydd has also been doing extensive research for two other projects – a novel about the Second World War seen from the German perspective and an account of the first successful expedition to Everest in 1953 which raises questions about official accounts and examines, in particular, the role played by the Deputy Leader, the Welshman Charles Evans, former Principal of Dafydd’s alma mater.
